On March 1, 2009, Citi Handlowy began to offer holders of a personal account the MasterCard PayPass contactless debit card. As of March 1, 2010, each holder of the personal account at Citi Handlowy may exchange the existing card for the new MasterCard PayPass debit card free of charge.

The new Citi Handlowy MasterCard PayPass debit card concludes non-cash transactions in a few seconds. Payments with contactless cards (not exceeding the amount of PLN 50) do not require entering a PIN code or signing the terminal printout. The client does not have to hand the card over to the seller but simply places the card in front of the PayPass reader. This is possible because contactless cards are equipped with a special transmitter so there is no need to insert the card in or swipe through the terminal.

For greater safety, contactless payments exceeding PLN 50 require confirmation by a PIN code or a signature on the terminal printout.

The safety of transactions is guaranteed by the microprocessor. The new cards link to a personal account are equipped both with the magnetic strip and microprocessor. Such solutions allow the clients to use the card at readers servicing chip cards and those which just service magnetic strip cards. At Citi Handlowy, PIN code is set by the clients through CitiPhone banking, Citi Handlowy ATMs or through Citibank Online.

Clients with a Citi Handlowy account can exchange their existing debit card for a contactless card by calling CitiPhone or making a request through Citibank Online. Such card exchange is free of charge for the client.

Currently, MasterCard PayPass contactless cards are accepted in Poland at McDonald’s restaurants, EMPiK stores, Zabka stores, CoffeeHeaven café chain, and Kolporter press stores.

The MasterCard PayPass contactless card is used by more than 70 million people worldwide in more than 200,000 accepting locations equipped with PayPass technology.
